College-sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners Named

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of more than 2,500 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Among these talented students includes seven from Katy ISD:

  • Woo Choi, Taylor HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: orthodontics;
  • Sohye Joo, Taylor HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: biomedicine;
  • Grant Winkelmann, Taylor HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: agricultural management;
  • David Bjerkaas, Cinco Ranch HS, National Merit University of Oklahoma Scholarship, probable career field: chemical engineering;
  • Angela Camille, Seven Lakes HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: chemical engineering;
  • Bohao Cheng, Cinco Ranch HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: petroleum engineering;
  • Dylan Rasch, Seven Lakes HS, National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship, probable career field: geology;

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. 

To date this academic year, Katy ISD has had a total of 18 seniors receiving scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation – three Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners, eight National Merit Scholarship winners and the seven students announced last week. An additional group of College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners is expected to be announced in July.
